ENIAC THE FIRST ELECTRONIC COMPUTER

The name ENIAC is an acronym for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator. The proposal for the first electronic computer came from a group headed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the Moore School of the University of Pennsylvania. As original conceived, the ENIAC was to be a general-purpose computer. The US Army subsidized it. The most radical features of the propose computer was the use of 18,000 vacuum tubes in its circuitry [some expert were convinced that, because vacuum tubes were not sufficiently reliable, any computer with such a large number of them would unworkable]. The ENIAC also contained 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitor, and 7,500 switches. It weighed 30 tons and occupied the entire 15,000 square feet of the Moore School’s basement laboratory. On its test run in February 1946, the ENIAC took only two to solve a nuclear physics problem that would have previously have required 100 years of calculation by a physicist. The ENIAC’S speed of calculation was a thousand times faster than the best mechanical calculators. Although with in a few years Maunchly and Eckert produced a computer that could outperform it, the ENIAC continued in operation until October 1995, when it was disassemble.

Q: Are there any advancements inspace travel?

A: The three biggest space projects are the Mars Project, the Galileo Project, and the testing and construction of the International Space Station. In the Mars project, scientists are looking into the possibility and are actually testing whether man can walk on Mars. They are even going a step further by locking at theories about transforming the landscape of Mars into something similar to that of the Earth's.
Galileo is an unmanned spacecraft that has been exploring our neighboring planets, particularly Jupiter and itsa moon. One of Galileo's discoveries has been the likelihood of am method of a melted saltwater ocean under Europa's icy crust, making that moon of great interests for future study of the possibility of extraterrestrial life. You can read about Galileo's mission in Jupiter.
The International Space Station is the largest and most complex international scientific project in history. Led by the United State, the International Space Station draws upon the scientific and technological resources of 16 nations: Canada, Japan, Russia, 11 nations of the European Space Agency and Brazil. When completed, the International Space Station will have a mass of about 1,040,000 pounds. It will measure 356 feet across and 290 feet long, with almost an acre of solar panels to provide electrical power to six state of-the-art laboratories

Q: What causes tooth decay?

A: Wear, tear and injury may damage teeth. But in addition to these causes, bacteria can cause tooth decay. The human mouth is contains an immense number of bacteria. This is because the mouth is warm, dark, moist and contains tiny particles of food that help nourish bacteria. Both aerobic and anaerobic thrive inside the mouth. Anaerobic bacteria, those that do not need oxygen to survive, find their way inside a tooth trough tiny cracks. Once inside, where there is no oxygen, these anaerobic bacteria start to damage the tooth.

Tooth decay can be the result of feeding a colony of germs inside the mouth with food composed of refined sugars. The sugars of candies, cakes and soft drinks are easir for bacteria to digest, compared to fruits and vegetables. A tiny bit of food remaining in the mouth after a meal is enough to nourish millions of bacteris for 24 hours or more.
The formation of plaque also contributes to tooth decay. Plaque is a sticky substance that forms a film over the surface of the teeth. If not removed regularly through flossing and brushing, plaque may develop into a rough and hard substance called tartar, or dental calculus.

Q: How do dogs sniff out drugs and explosives?

A: Police and customs throughout the world use "sniffer" dogs to detect drugs and explosives.
Breeds of dogs that are trained for "sniffing" job include labradors, collies and spaniels and other retriever dogs; most popular, however, are German shepherd
dogs
Dogs have a far better sense of smell than a human do because the smell receptors at top of their noses are 100 times longer than in humans.
The training course for a sniffer dog normally lats about 12 weeks. The dog is first taught to recognize a particular drug or explosive.
Its handler(the person who trains the dog) hides a sample of the substance inside something the dog can grip in its mouth- a rolled -up newspaper or a rag- which is known as a training aid.
The dog is commanded to bring the aid back to its handler, and then recieves a reward. The reward could be a food or anything that the dog enjoys doing, like a friendly fight or game.
